grapevine
cooling our farmhouse naturally with a grapevine, feeding family + farm animals
welcome to the monthly matinée, a retrospective of the appleturnover long-form films. next up is grapevine.
the grapevine arbour follows natural patterns to create a resilient, sustainable design for both home and garden. the simple form of a grape arbour gives multiple yields, and allows us to live in greater harmony with ecological systems in a changing climate.
just now the grapes are ready — send a note if you are local and you want some! — and i swear they have never been bigger, in such profuse and massive bunches. i’m going to have a go at making syrup from them to substitute for the maple syrup or coconut sugar we might have bought for our winter baking. ok, i’m off to walk the goats, who are more excited about the grape leaves, and i’ll pick more hazelnuts before they fall down to those eager ducks. september is nonstop.
thanks for watching, sharing and supporting. this letter is free, and if you’d like to become a paid subscriber you’ll get to download the journal of small work book (the fourth volume is shaping up!) as well as a whole year of monthly tours of the farm. and all my gratitude! thank you! meet you back here next sunday for the weekend letter.

Here in Ontario we have a native grapevine that seems invasive (choking trees and generally difficult to manage). Do you have issues with yours having baby vines popping up wherever or does it tend to stay put?
Absolutely, what a gent! I believe he was also in your broody hen film, poking around your sweet broody box when you were letting broody out for a stroll… swoon…. ☺️ Lol… he seems v mild mannered
